Xpress Yo’self
Enthusiastic about dance from a very young age, Hakeem has been dancing informally for many years. He turned professional with Danceworks and has been adding to his portfolio ever since.
His career began with choreographing a street dance show for the Afro-Caribbean Society at the University of Hull. In the years since, Hakeem has achieved great success with his series of popular Xpress Yo’self street dance classes at Danceworks. He also founded his youth dance programme, and his 30-member professional dance company: Impact Dance.
Hakeem has taken some of his younger dance students onto the Nickelodeon television channel. Some have now gone on to dance professionally; others are working in schools with children as part of Hakeem’s programme. This year Hakeem’s Impact Dance was selected as one of six youth dance companies from the UK to work with Mark Murphy of DV8 on a new show for the Royal Festival Hall.
Impact Dance has gained international recognition. In addition to the work with DV8, they have performed with a top line-up of hip-hop artists and companies from all over the world - including Sadler’s Wells earlier this year in a show entitled Breakin’ Convention. |
